A massive burst of obscenity, then some quick, angry work with the metal-cutting blade on the Black & Decker jigsaw.
You can still find the plates screwed over the propshaft tunnel cutouts on the OD Spitfires & GT6's turning up now & then at junkyards & ebay. A rectangle of aluminum bent over the cutout with a sheet metal screw on either end does the same thing.

I managed to find a dirtcheap plate on ebay. It's in the mail right now ;)
I had the same burst of obscenity - though I didn't use the jigsaw but a scissor :-)'
Cheers
